Your Pain isn’t Just Physical: the Biopsychosocial Model

Are you currently struggling with chronic pain? Maybe back, hip, or shoulder pain? A disc herniation? A spondylolisthesis? Facet arthritis? Degenerative Disc Disease?

Whatever the issue is, chronic pain is more complicated than people want to hear. It isn’t all about mechanics, movement, stretching, strengthening, and massaging. While movement is a crucial piece to the puzzle, the complexity of pain reaches far beyond that.

There are hundreds of pain studies out there and here are a FEW things that have been shown to INCREASE our pain:

  • our lack of confidence in our body and life

  • fear of movement

  • the quality and amount of our sleep

  • our diet (inflammatory)

  • how much time we spend in nature and get sun vs. inside on screens

  • how much stress we are under

  • how much anxiety we have

  • unresolved past or current trauma

  • how we think and talk about our pain to ourselves and others

  • how our parents responded to our pain when we were young

  • our education about how pain works

  • the manipulation from the pharmaceutical industry that pain is bad and needs to be covered up with pills…

  • the list goes on... and on... and on

The above list is often referred to as the biopsychosocial model of pain - it implies that pain is biological, genetic, and mechanical, but it also asserts that our mind and environment also play a huge role in pain.

These are all topics we cover extensively in our programs. I used to only focus on movement to help resolve peoples’ pain, and although it worked sometimes for acute and chronic pains, it didn’t help chronic pain most of the time. Over the last several years, I have learned much about how pain works from books, podcasts, and other pain-science social accounts.

As a result, our members overcome pain significantly faster and are more resilient to future bouts of pain. Remember, pain is inevitable and will pop up throughout life - how we respond to our pain ultimately determines whether or not it controls us.
