Bryan Crosby was told by three different doctors that he needed surgery for a massive disc herniation at L5-S1.
One even told him: “99 out of 100 times… we’re operating.” At his worst, Bryan was dealing with severe low back pain, sciatica, and progressive nerve symptoms, including drop foot.
His MRI showed a large disc extrusion at L5-S1 with nerve root compression, along with findings consistent with spondylolisthesis (vertebral slippage)—a diagnosis that made surgery seem inevitable.
At his lowest point, Bryan:
• Couldn’t walk, sit, or stand without severe pain
• Developed foot dorp and worsening nerve symptoms
• Tried injections, physical therapy, and anything to numb the pain
• Was on the verge of filing for disability
• Fell into a state of depression after losing his active lifestyle
There was no single injury. No accident. Just a gradual breakdown that took everything from him. Instead of going through with surgery (and potentially a spinal fusion in his late 30s), Bryan chose a different path… rebuilding his body through movement, strength, and consistency.
Over time:
• Pain started to decrease
• Function returned
• He hit a breakthrough moment running up stairs for the first time in nearly a year
• Follow-up imaging showed significant improvement in his disc herniation
• A doctor even created a case report on his recovery Today, Bryan is:
• Completely pain-free
• Playing hockey multiple times per week
• Running, biking, and lifting without limitations
• Living a fully active life again In his own words: “You saved my life"
This episode breaks down exactly what happened, what he learned, and what’s actually possible when you approach recovery the right way.
If you’re dealing with:
• Sciatica
• Disc herniations or disc bulges
• Chronic low back pain
• Nerve pain, numbness, or tingling
Being told you “need back surgery”
• Failed PT, injections, or temporary fixes
You’re not alone.... and you’re not broken. What you’ll learn in this episode:
• What a severe L5-S1 disc herniation actually feels like
• Why multiple doctors may recommend surgery
• What early-stage recovery really looks like (hint: it’s not glamorous)
• How small, consistent progress leads to massive breakthroughs
• The mindset required to push through the hardest phases
• Why movement quality and full-body mechanics matter more than quick fixes
• How Bryan returned to sport and daily life pain-free
